How to add live chat to Squarespace

Squarespace has no live chat of its own, so you add one with a few lines of code. Here is which plans allow it, exactly where the code goes, and what to check when the bubble does not appear.

Squarespace has no live chat of its own for your visitors. You add one by pasting a chat service’s code into Code Injection, which needs the Core plan or above. It takes about five minutes. Below: which plans allow it, exactly where the code goes, the two things that stop a bubble appearing, and how to choose the chat itself. Checked against Squarespace’s help centre on 9 October 2026.

If you are on Basic, the only way to get a chat on the site is to move up a plan. A link to a contact page or an email address is the fallback.

Add live chat to Squarespace, step by step

  1. Get your chat’s code. Every live chat service gives you a short script. In ReplaChat it is under Settings → Stores → your shop → “Put chat on” that shop, with the shop’s key already filled in.
  2. Open Code Injection in Squarespace. On current sites it sits in the Pages panel, under Custom Code. Squarespace has moved this menu before; its code injection help article always has the current way in.
  3. Paste the script into the Footer box and save. Squarespace places footer code just before the closing body tag of every page, which is where chat scripts belong.
  4. Check it in a private window. Open your site logged out, wait a second, and the bubble appears in the corner. Send yourself a message to see it arrive.

This is what ReplaChat’s script looks like. Yours carries your own server’s address and your shop’s key:

<script>
  (function(w,d,s,u,k){
    w.ReplaChatSettings={key:k,baseUrl:u};
    var g=d.createElement(s),f=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
    g.async=1;g.src=u+"/static/widget/replachat.js";f.parentNode.insertBefore(g,f);
  })(window,document,"script","https://chat.yourdomain.com","your-shop-key");
</script>

Tip. In ReplaChat, add your Squarespace address under the shop’s “Websites allowed to show this chat”. Then the script only works on your own site, even if someone copies it.

When the chat bubble does not appear

  1. You are on Basic. Code injection is not available, so the script never runs.
  2. You are looking at checkout. Squarespace does not run custom code on checkout pages; the bubble shows everywhere else.
  3. It vanishes between pages on a 7.0 site. Ajax loading can conflict with custom code, as Squarespace’s custom code article says. Turn Ajax loading off.
  4. You are checking inside the editor. Look at the live site instead, in a private window and logged out, so you see exactly what visitors see.
  5. The address is not allowed. If your chat service limits which websites may show it, add the Squarespace domain, including the www. version if you use it.

Chat on one page only

If you only want chat on, say, your booking page, skip Code Injection and add a Code Block to that page with the same script. JavaScript in Code Blocks also needs Core or above.

Choosing the live chat for a Squarespace site

Any chat service that gives you a script will work. The difference is how you pay and where the conversations live.

tawk.toFree; branding off and extras paid per sitetawk.to’s cloud
TidioBy conversations a monthTidio’s cloud

IntercomPer seat, plus per AI answerIntercom’s cloud

If you run more than one site

Many Squarespace owners have a second site: a shop and a studio, or one site per brand. In ReplaChat each site is a shop with its own bubble, colours, greeting and opening hours, and every chat lands in one inbox. You choose which people answer which site. It is $299 once, runs on your own server, and is the same script on Squarespace, Wix, Shopify or WordPress.

What to know first. ReplaChat needs a small server of your own (about €5–15 a month), or we set it up or host it for you. It has no AI answering for you, and no WhatsApp or SMS.

Questions about Squarespace live chat

Does Squarespace have built-in live chat?

Not for your visitors. Squarespace’s own pricing page lists code injection as the way to add things “like Meta Pixel or live chat services”, so you add a chat service’s code to your site.

Which Squarespace plan do I need for live chat?

Core, Plus or Advanced, or one of the older plans that include code injection. On Basic, code injection is not available and Code Blocks cannot run JavaScript, so a chat widget cannot run there.

Why does the chat not show on my checkout page?

Squarespace does not run custom code on its checkout pages. The bubble appears everywhere else.

The chat bubble disappears when I click to another page. Why?

On older version 7.0 templates, Ajax loading swaps pages without a full reload, and Squarespace says it can conflict with custom code. Turn off Ajax loading in the template’s settings.

Can I put live chat on just one Squarespace page?

Yes: paste the code into a Code Block on that page instead of the site-wide footer. Running JavaScript in a Code Block also needs Core or above.

Can my agents see what is in a Squarespace shopper’s basket?

Not by itself. ReplaChat shows the page a shopper started on and each page they wrote from. The basket can be passed in with a line of code, but Squarespace does not hand it over automatically.

Own your live chat.

$299 once. Every shop, every person, one inbox. Nobody charges you per agent again.

The demo is read-only, with its logins on the homepage. Questions first? hello@replachat.com, or the chat bubble in the corner, which is ReplaChat itself.
